Department of Urdu
The Department of Urdu has a rich and distinguished history. Research indicates that the first Professor and Head of the Department was Prof. Muhammad Abu Saeed, who later became the Principal of Millat College, Darbhanga. He was a highly respected teacher and academician.
Following his tenure, Prof. Syed Nawab Kareem took charge as the Head of the Department. He contributed significantly to Urdu literature and is associated with numerous literary works, including Kaleem Se Haali Tak. He was not only a successful academician but also an expert in administrative affairs.
Subsequently, Prof. Ejaz Ali Arshad assumed leadership of the department. He later became the Principal of Patna College and the Vice-Chancellor of Maulana Mazharul Haque Arabic-Persian University, Patna. A distinguished critic, poet, and writer, he authored several notable works, including Dawat Adawat, a book on humor and satire, which gained immense popularity. His other significant literary contributions include Krishan Chandra Ki Novel Nigari and Ibn-ul-Waqt. His articles have been published in reputed national and international journals. In recognition of his literary and administrative contributions, he has received numerous honors. He also served as the Head of the Postgraduate (PG) Department of Urdu at Patna University.
After the retirement of Prof. Ejaz Ali Arshad, Prof. S. M. Javed Hayat took charge as the Head of the PG Department of Urdu at Patna University. Prior to this, he had served for a long time as the Head of the Department of Urdu at B.N. College, Patna. He also held the position of Vice President of the Patna University Teachers’ Association (PUTA). Renowned for his administrative skills, he has authored numerous articles and books. His notable work, Mawadiyat-e-Sahafat, is included in the university syllabus.
Following the successful tenure of Prof. S.M. Javed Hayat, Dr. Shahab Zafar Azmi became the Head of the PG Department of Urdu. Today, the Urdu Department holds a prestigious position in the university due to its excellence in education, administration, and teaching. Over the years, many professors, scholars, and department heads have held significant positions both within and beyond the university. Several teachers and scholars associated with this department have brought recognition to the university at national and international levels.
Currently, Dr. Md. Jalaluddin and Dr. Naushad Ahmad are serving in the Urdu Department with dedication and professional integrity. Dr. Md. Jalaluddin brings with him fourteen years of experience in publishing the university’s monthly journal, Tahzibul Akhlaq & Nishant, at AMU, Aligarh, before joining this department. In 1998, he also edited and published Aftab-98, a 345-page magazine at AMU, Aligarh. He has actively participated in nearly twenty national and international seminars and workshops. Dr. Md. Jalaluddin joined the Department of Urdu at B.N. College, Patna University, in February 2020.
Many students from this department have secured esteemed positions in various fields. During the 2015–2018 academic session, a student, Mr. Md. Shams Chishti, secured the first position in the university and was awarded a gold medal in B.A. Urdu (Hons). Additionally, Mrs. Rahmat Yunus and Mr. Md. Iftikhar Ansari qualified for the Assistant Professorship competition conducted by BPSC, Patna. Many other students from this department have pursued higher education at prestigious institutions such as JNU, AMU, and Delhi University after clearing competitive examinations.
With its strong academic foundation and distinguished faculty, the future of this department remains bright.
