Department of Psychology
History of department of Psychology runs parallel to the history of B.N. College. It was formarily started and set-up in the year 1950 under the headship of Prof. R.C. Haldar who joined in 01-08-1950 as first head of the department and remained till 31-01-1960. He served the department about 10 years.
Prof. N.L. Kangi joined as head after Prof. Haldar but he remained and served the department for a very short period (01-02-1960 to 03-03-1960) soon after that Dr. K.K. Jamuar joined as head on 04-03-1960 and remained till 31-05-1966. He was also a social thinker and great writer. He also served as Director of Institute of Psychology Research and service, P.U., (IPRS) Prof. R.B. Singh joined in 01-06-1966- 31-07-1973. Prof. K.A. Mirza joined after R.B. Singh in 01-08-1973 and served the department till 31-05-1984 and Prof. R.B. Singh 01-06-1984 – 31-08-1985 second time. Prof. J.N Sinha, joined as head in 01-09-1985 and remained till 23-01-1998. He started P.G. Courses in Psychology and continued till 1998. After that he joined as director of IPRS, P.U. and then he became the head of P.G. Department of Psychology, P.U.
Dr. Rajehwar Prasad Sinha joined in the year 24-01-1998 and remained head till 31-01-2002. Dr. Kanak Varma joined as head in 01-02-2002 and served the department as a head for the longest period (20-07-2015)
At present Dr. Nand Lal Paswan is head of the department since 21-07-2015. Dr. Akbar Ali (Reader) was also in the B.N. College, who later transferred to P.G. Deptt. Prof. Kartik Jha was also in the B.N. College but he also transferred to P.G. Deptt., P.U. Prof. Kartik Jha also joined as Director of IPRS, P.U. and at present he is head of the P.G. Department of Psychology, P.U.
Prof. Janak Pandey was also in B.N. College, later transferred to Allahabad. He also served as Vice-Chancellor of Central University of Bihar. A part from the three year degree courses, department of Psychology runs a counselling cell since 2005. It was started and set up under the headship of Dr. Kanak Varma. Several types of Psychological/Personal Problems of students are solved and counsel for the better life prospects.
